How much more fun would it be to sail goods up and down the coast rather than drive a truck? Join us for a look at sail cargo enterprises and efforts around the world and imagine some ways that this might be done in WA, especially in a fuel crisis.
The closing of the Strait of Hormuz and the resultant tightening of fuel supplies has reminded us, yet again, that too much of our society relies upon cheap fossil fuels. From fertilisers to plastics, fuel for airplanes to fuel for shipping; fossil fuels are a finite resource and the rate at which we are burning them is unsettling the atmosphere.
But how could life be without them? One of our ongoing research threads at Time’s Up is the question as to how infrastructure could change to live an a fossil fuel free world. Shipping is still one of the easiest ways to move large things long distances, but do we need ammonia, ethanol, sails or something else to move us?
This talk looks at existing projects and developments, from tiny river based delivery services to high tech hard wings and Flettner rotors.
