In October 2023 the Johannes Kepler University Linz and the University of Applied Arts Vienna launched a new joint Bachelor program that combines the imaginative potential of the arts with the empirical rigor of scientific methods to engage with transformation processes in society today.
The newly established Art x Science School for Transformation, an inter-university institute for research, education, and critical practice, brings together artists, academics, and members of society in a collaborative effort to develop novel approaches to real-world problems that characterize „imperial modes of living“ in industrialized economies today.
We are glad to be involved in this new endeavour. We are looking forward to investigating with a group of students various scenarios developed around ‘Resistant Ecologies’. Students will be tasked to develop playful, research-based action scenarios for disrupting and redirecting vulnerabilities, grievances, or harmful exposures by envisioning modes of being and relating to the river ‘otherwise’ - for the river is the very model of unending change.
Developing novel and speculative scenarios for the river will involve multiple ways of thinking and acting. Participants will be working with the elemental properties and relations of the river, both physical and metaphorical, as well as recognizing the historical entanglements of social and environmental violence and harm, attempted improvements, well intended adaptations, experiences of control and being overwhelmed.
The process will experiment with unexpunged energies and potentials to facilitate unsolicited modes of encounter and cohabitation across social and natural divides.
